Hi Alex,
Music and churches... life is cyclical...I was recently re-contacted by my veryu first (5th grade) girl friend. When I knew her we lived in Queens, now i live in New Hyde Park and she lives in Elmont, just a few doors away from where I lived for 3 years before coming to NHP in 2000. Apparently we were neighbors for almost 2 years and never realized it. Wew';re going to meet Monday night at the Lantern Diner (Nassau Blvd & Hempstead Tpke. i promised to check out a meeting that night at her Church, where she sings in the choir. It's an evangelical Christian church (Church of the Intercessor in Malverne) so I'm a bit concerned i'll find myself in a born-again revival meeting, but sometimes you just have to toss the dice...
Once you get in there is a very nice woman at the info desk and she gives easy directions to the room.
I can't be there tomorrow - I have a doc conflict and too much practicing for my upcoming recital at the library.
Hello again! When my brother Matt was at Holy Spirit was about 10-15 years ago. He left the parish and left the priesthood soon after that. I was involved with the keyboardist in the parish (John - I forget his last name). About that time I moved to Floral Park then later to New Hyde Park.My parish was Holy Spirit where I was a Religious Ed instructor and provided some guitar work for their contemporary mass along with popular music for teen club functions and parish events until the stroke.
I haven't had the visceral reactions to music, although I get frosted when the guitarists playing my music in the studio don't do it the way I did it.That's just ego, but it leads to feelings of frustration because my sense memories are strong and I feel like I should just show them how it's done and that brings me back to the damned hand...but I still have my mind and my voice, and maybe some other guitarist's ideas will IMPROVE my songs.
While my faith in God is as strong as ever (stronger) my faith in Catholicism and the church itself has withered. I left Religious Ed after 10 years at the beginning of last fall's term, and I don't imagine I'll return.
ANYWAY... as the spring comes on maybe we can do lunch sometime.
Thanks for reaching out
Hi Alex! How's it going? I'm realizing that we're nearby each other (I'm in New Hyde Park). My band played at the hope for Stroke benefit at Mulcahy's last summer. I go to school at Adelphi University in Garden City. My younger brother used to be a priest at Blessed Sacrament RC Church in your town. Small world, eh?
