This seems to be the most complained about deficit by survivors. However researchers seem to think spasticity is useful. Spasticity After Stroke: Why Bother? http://stroke.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/35/8/1787. ‘The focus on spasticity in str...

Sharon, The only thing I can suggest is to get some muscle anatomy books to figure out what controls what. The one recommended to me by my OT was Anatomy of Movement by Blandine Calais-Germain. It helps me visualize what muscles are being used for...

Sharon, Thanks for the NOGO link, i had not seen that specific one.I may have to see a new physiatrist again and ask what is new in stroke rehab. I know neuroplasticity works, it is just a matter what exactly needs to be done to get it going. Of c...

Sounds like HoWARD uses the easy neuroplasticity to recover, similar to CIMT, where the penumbra of the stroke was knocked unconscious and is recovering. This is compared to hard neuroplasticity where the epicenter of the stroke is dead and what i...

Hi Dean,
As you can see, this site gives us a place to be where we are not alone. Sometimes it feels like nobody around us understands our situations, but here we meet other folks walking the same path. That makes it easier sometimes. I'm 6 years past my stroke (October 2002) and I've adapted to my new situation very successfully, but it's still with me every day and when I come here I don't feel so much like an alien.

Hi Dean, I'd like to share a little of my story with you. My stroke of October 2007 left me without the entire left side of my body. I was a young 52 year old with a young boy to raise and I struggled to have the will to continue to live. I am a licenced optician as well as a professional pianist and liturgical organist. My stroke brought all of that to an end. Although going through months of therapy my arm and hand still have not returned and my leg is still extremely weak. Five months after my stroke (I'm trying to regain everything at this point - thinking that I'm getting better) the doctors tell me that my right middle cerebral artery is 90% closed and that I am going to suffer another stroke that will be fatal. The only way to repair the artery is via intracranial stenting. The proceedure has high risks and there was a hugh possibility that I will not survive the procedure. Since there are only a handfull of doctors in the US qualified to do this surgery, I was lucky enough to find one who was a pioneer in the procedure. I had the surgery and survived. Although I still can not play piano anymore, I can not work, walk or be the person that I was. Days are difficult for me as I 'm certain they are for you and all survivors. No one understands, except us. Life, these days, does present itself as the "loser's square". You're quite correct. However, we did survive. We are still here for a reason. I guess that we still have a purpose in being here. Only God knows what it is. I, like you, struggle each and every day to make it through physically, mentally and emotionally, trying to make sense of it all. It takes courage, which, as stroke survivors, we have (no matter how difficult) and that places us in the "winners circle". Be strong in knowing that there are many who stand in our shoes. We are all here for each other.

"Courage does not always roar! Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day that says, I will try again tomorrow".

Peace and Blessings!

What my stroke looks like

I just joined a research study on ankle movement at the University of Minnesota so I got a fMRI and saw this huge black spot where my stroke was. I never saw any of my original scans so this was a surprise, it looked like 1/3 of the right half of the brain was dark. This was both depressing and hopeful since I have made pretty good progress so far, showing that neuroplasticity is working for me but depressing because I have lots of ability to pack into whats left of my brain. I have to remember… Continue
