Ischemia covers the lion share of stroke survivors, approx. 80% it is cause by a blockage or clotting in an artery. What is yours like after treatment?

Hi Elizabeth,
I am from Orange, My Dad is in Forster, so he is not too far from you, he is still in much the same state as I wrote earlier.
Thankfully I have a cousin who has now moved to Forster especially to start working with my dad to try to strengthen him, the work my dad was doing with the physio alone was not enough to keep my dad strong or to prevent spacticity, I would love to work with my dad myself, unfortunateley I have to watch from a distance as my husband refuses to move to Forster and my dad and step mum refuse to move to Orange. My heart aches to help.
Thankyou for leaving me a message I had almost forgotten I joined this site.

I did kiss the Blarney stone, see my page I posted the photo they take for you. At the time I had severe back pain as I ripped the muscles in my lower back pushing my car when it broke down at my front gate, one day before we left for London, however it only hurt when I leaned forward, not back, so there I am, I had more trouble climbing those steps to the tower.
My stroke was probably very different to yours, I suspect yours was from a clot in an artery in the brain, mine was from a bleed from a vein, from an ateriovenous malformation in my temporal and occipital lobes. It was however very close to Broca's area which controls speech and understanding of speech and also the visual cortex, they were constantly checking my peripheral vision when I was in St George hospital after the stroke but it is ok.I can have surgery so it will never happen again but I have chosen not to and to take my chances, I don't like the thought of them digging around in my brain.Your stroke was obviously in a motor area and the hand arm rehab is always extremely difficult. If you have courage and determination I am sure you will succeed in getting back use of that area.
Bellingen that is very close to me, please contact and come around home, you can even stay here if you wish we have spare rooms, although my Mother is taking up the main spare room at the moment. We are right in the middle of town a short walk to the CBD or the jetty area.

You are correct, if you want good rehap you are going to have to pay for it. I worked as a nurse for almost 30 years, the last 11 years as a nurse consultant in Psychogeriatrics, but I do know what goes on in the wards. the rehab units are so clogged up with geriatrics waiting placement in residential aged care facilities that they have no time for their real job, so private is the only way to go.
I live in Coffs Harbour, but I only travel to Melbourne, by air to see my daughters, so not much chance of calling in to see you, but who knows. I would like to meet you one day, maybe you will be passing through Coffs, let me know and I will introduce you to my three dogs.

Hello Elizabeth
I thought I should say Hello, seeing we are friends.Chris is correct we are all friendly here and only too happy to help if we can. I personally hate the use of platitudes in any interaction but am willing to help with advice from my own experiences. If you have read any of my postings on this site you will know that I am a bit of a fraud, I have no physical symptoms from my stroke, My main problem was and has been depression, which comes and goes. I also had and still have to certain degree dyslexia, the depression and dyslexia stop me from being able to work and that is a shit.
I will have to think of a nick name for you, I have names for my friends, like Don is septic then there is china and cobber.
I guess you chose me to be a friend because I am Australian.
Sorry I took so long to contact but I have been busy with my mother, taking her to Sydney for a pacemaker and an ablation and then looking after her in my home, she is now great and since the ablation her heart is beating away in a steady rate of 80 to 100 bpm and she is feeling great, so now I can get back to my own life.
Tell me about yourself, I promise I will not offer any platitudes.
Slainte......Peter

It's pretty easy going once you get acclimated. Just play around with it a bit...You know, I'm very partial to the name Elizabeth, one of my best friends in high school ( who unfortunately passed on much too soon of cancer at 45) was Lizzie Higgins...for whom my lovely daughter Elizabeth is named..plus Dr. Elizabeth Wirkowski got me through those dark days immediately following the stroke. She still works with me today, and when I almost slipped away during one crisis, a young nurse named Elizabeth Ballard brought me back to life afterI had flatlined. I'm not normally superstitious... but I have automatic good feelings towards anyone named Elizabeth...Glad to make you acquaintance!
