Hello, Susan, Thank you for your post. I have been repeatedly told that progress for my husband will taper off soon. At 27 months after the stroke, the doctor was so impressed by my husband's progress, particularly his ankle movement, that he was ...

Susan, Persistenc pays big dividends. Winston Churchill said, "Never, never, never give up, never give in." I also like Napoleon Hill's quote "Prersistence is to the character of man as carbon is to steel." I know persistence played a major role i...

GOD'S PLAN

GOD’S PLAN

On November 23, 2005 at the age of 42, my life began anew. I had suffered a stroke caused by a clot in my brain. left paralyzed on my left side, I had to learn to use my entire my left side again. God in his grace saved my right side and voice. I am right handed thankfully. One of my greatest joys now is supporting stroke survivors and anyone who needs the love of Jesus .I went through multiple trials of therapy, God blessed me with the best and most encouraging therapists. Due to… Continue

I tried botox and it worked for my biceps allowing me to work on my triceps. A lot of work later the triceps work fairly well, but not yet free floating in space. My finger flexors were also botoxed but since my finger extensors were totally dead, it didn't do any good as I haven't neuroplastically moved control of them to another place yet. I figure the 'Y' is probably the place where i am getting most of my recovery.

Susan you asked quite a while ago about my goals, Sorry about the delay, life intervened, I just got back from a woodturning course at North House Folk School in Grand marias,MN. It was good to get back to doing some woodworking again. My goals are to get back to everything I did prior, whitewater canoeing, I did two canoe trips last year with Wilderness Inquiry and will be taking a three week trip this summer with them again. I have been able to get into and paddle a whitewater canoe during some pool sessions this winter. Great for balance but I have lots of work to do yet, My grip needs a lot of strengthening, my bicep needs to allow straightening of the arm. I need to be able to switch the paddle from side to side which means I need to be able to release the spastic death grip i have on the paddle shaft. Spending 3 minutes prying my hand off the paddle and switching to the other side needs to be able to be done in seconds rather than minutes. Biking is also a goal, two wheeler, the release of the hand is a major problem with this goal. I do have a 3 wheel adult tricycle but that is slow and I cuurrently can't raise the seat post high enough to pedal it properly. Playing the saxophone is also a goal, this may take years becuse i have no finger dexterity right now. I want to be able to run again, not that I was a runner but I want to be able to get across streets faster. I've been trying to get the book by Tommye Lee mayer, Teaching Me to Run. Basically I am breaking down all the things i want to do and working on the individual muscle movements. I have to believe I am smart enough to be able to have parts of my brain handle multiple tasks. I am going to a 12 week Tai Chi class which I know will help my balance and movement. I wrote up my various exercises and stretches and it turned into 3 pages worth. No wonder I am exhausted all the time.
Take care,
Dean
What are your goals?
